Summer Post #16: Twitter, Emotion, and the Olympics

http://www.emoto2012.org/ has been tracking the EMOTIONS of OLYMPICS viewers through tweets.

“We track twitter for themes related to the Games, analyse the messages for content and emotional expressions, and visualise topics and tone of the conversation.”

REAL TIME DATA VIZ
“Our real-time data visualization shows both the big picture, the world from above, and the intimate and personal. In topics view, we see the big picture, which event, athlete or topic is generating the most attention in the moment, and the mix of positive and negative emotions for each. The anecdotal and ephemeral is seen in the message stream view. An overview on each day shows an even bigger picture, the trends and patterns. This is a whole new way to experience and make sense of the pulse of the Games”

The project requires the use of LEXALYTICS, or a “Sentiment Analysis” through language in Twitter chatter.

“After the Olympic Games, the millions of online interactions will be transformed into physical form in a physical artwork. This data art sculpture will serve as an aggregate archive of the collective response to the Olympics.”
