What is the difference between “validity” and “truth”?

How do we effectively make counter-claims?

Two TOKish Films Coming

There are 2 films coming out now (both sort of dystopian sci-fi) that I think would be a great connection to TOK.

The first is “Branded” (OFFICIAL WEBSITE – I love how they make you read QR codes!)

Wow, it’s like Matrix meets Marx.

The next is “Prototype”. The trailer mentions Ray Kurzweil and “The Singularity”.

YOU ARE NOT SO SMART Project

You-are-not-so-smart

I have already posted about this amazing book, based on a blog, earlier this summer

http://ljatok13.posterous.com/summer-post-22-you-are-not-so-smart

As part of our REASONING UNIT (Reasoning as a Way of Knowing), we’ll be exploring several chapters within our “TOK Tribes”, and then creating short films highlighting the important concepts.

1. Each Tribe member will get a copy of the chapter to read and highlight.

2. Group members will create a threaded conversation in Diigo (Group DP2) to discuss important points and brainstorm ideas for the film.

3. There are a couple of NEW TECH TOOLS you could use to create a short film (although any style is ok)

WeVideo (online in-the-cloud collaborative video editing)

PowToons (see tutorials here)

Annotated Interactive YouTube or Choose Your Own Adventure YouTube

4. SPECS:

a. you must cover all the important concepts and points

b. you must disclose the major “misconception” and the “truth” at least once.

c. you must end with “and this is why ‘YOU ARE NOT SO SMART‘”

You are now grouped in smaller sub groups which we’ll affectionately (or not) call “TOK Tribes”

By next class, please come up with an appropriate name for your “tribe”, as there are 9 and it will make life easier.

You will serve as a “blog buddy” for all your group members.

1st Assignment: Check your group members’ blogs to check if they’ve completed both the Summer Curation AND the TED ED lesson. If not- let them know! (You will be choosing one TED ED lesson to explore at a later time)

2nd Assignment: Start a Diigo threaded “TOPIC” discussion in Diigo DP2 Group (you have all been invited so make sure you are in)…the convo will be related to your “You Are Not That Smart” fallacy reading and plan for film. (see other post for more detail)
