Summer Post #18: Olympic Rings Infographics: Global Issues

More often than not, there is beauty in the simple.

In fact, Leonardo Da Vinci famously commented that

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”

This summer, as with all Olympic years, we are bombarded the with Olympic logo of the 5 intertwined rings, which debuted at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics.

You can READ MORE ABOUT THEIR HISTORY AND SYMBOLISM HERE

In the words of the designer and founder of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin,

“…the six colours [including the flag’s white background] thus combined reproduce the colours of all the nations, with no exception. The blue and yellow of Sweden, the blue and white of Greece, the tri- colours of France, England and America, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Hungary, the yellow and red of Spain next to the novelties of Brazil or Australia, with old Japan and new China. Here is truly an international symbol.”

One extremely clever Brazilian creative director and graphic artist, Gustavo Sousa, decided that it could an important social gesture to manipulate the Olympic logo rings into an animated infographic highlight significant, often dark global issues. The project (which has 16 prints representing the 16 days of the Olympics) is called (simply) oceaniaeuropeamericasafricaasia

His rationale?

“The rings represent healthy competition and union, but we know the world isn’t perfet. Maybe understanding the differences is the first step to try to make things more equal”

BLUE= OCEANA (Australia plus outlaying islands)

GREEN= ASIA

RED= the AMERICAS

BLACK= EUROPE

YELLOW= AFRICA

READ ORGINAL ARTICLE (if accessed, you can view the individual 16 stills and try to establish connections and derive “stories” from the data. For example…what might be the relationship, if any, between “Homicides” and “Guns” or “Billionaires” and “Child Mortality”, or “McDonald’s” and “Coca-Cola sales”?

Summer Post #10: World Without the Internet

Think about this Infographic in terms of Knowledge Implictions – what are the consequences of the information and knowledge that is created, archived, accessed and shared via the Internet? How would the world look different if the Internet did not exist?

Summer Post #7: Personal Branding and Promotion

This is the beginning of your Senior Year, and many of you will be networking to promote yourselves for jobs, internships, and of course, higher education.

I’ve recently found an article that describes the differences between several “PERSONAL BRANDING” sites you can use to build a simple resume or contact page, such as this

Here’s an an example of an about.me ( https://about.me/ ) page from someone you should follow on Twitter, media theorist Cole Stryker http://about.me/colestryker
